ASUS Crosshair V Formula 990FX Feature Overview

Extreme Engine Digi+

In order to deliver top of the line performance when overclocking, a motherboard has to have a solid power management system. This is where the Extreme Engine DIGI+ comes in. ASUS has designed the Crosshair V Formula to be an overclocking monster, capable of breaking and setting new records in terms of pushing hardware beyond what was previously thought possible. A combination of Analog and Digital design elements, the Extreme Engine DIGI+ can deliver clean, stable power and greater frequency range through a parallel multi-phase FET+ design. All the performance without compromising the thermal performance and efficiency through the use of higher grade power components, like alloy conductor for FET+, FPCAP 5K series capacitors and NEC TOKIN film capacitors for increased conductivity, and 1.3x faster heat dissipation, as well as packaged chokes for greater current support (up to 40A) with minimal loss.

Tri-channel DDR3 2133 (OC) Support with ASUS MemOK

The ASUS Crosshair V Formula supports AMD processors on the AM3 and AM3+ socket and can run dual-channel DDR3 memory up to 2133MHz (OC). In case a memory error occurs during overclocking, the Mem OK! Button allows the adjustment of memory settings to a more acceptable state, whether the error was because of a voltage or memory timing issue. This ensures maximum working compatibility for the memory when overclocking without resorting to a CMOS reset.

True SATA 6 Gb/s and USB 3.0 Support

SATA 6 Gb/s is natively supported on the latest AMD SB950 chipset but the ASUS Crosshair V Formula has an extra SATA 6 Gb/s port midboard and an eSATA 6 Gb/s port at the rear through an Asmedia SATA 6 controller. The ASUS Maximus IV Extreme offers unparalleled connectivity options for users who want maximum performance out of their drives.  An Asmedia ASM1042 USB 3.0 controller also adds USB 3.0 functionality to the Crosshair V Formula with 4 ports midboard and 2 more at the back I/O for a total of 6. The Asmedia ASM1042 USB 3.0 controller offers superior performance over the NEC USB 3.0 controller found on most of the latest mainboards available in the market.

BIOS Features

The ASUS Crosshair V Formula has multiple BIOS protection features, including BIOS Flashback and EZ Flash 2 for convenient BIOS flashing. Extreme overclockers, especially competitive users, require access to the BIOS as conveniently and swiftly as possible, just in case of a failed overclock. Crash Free BIOS 3 helps speed up the process of returning the Crosshair V Formula to a bootable state so that overclocking can be resumed.

Overclocking Features

For unparalleled ease when it comes to overclocking, the ASUS Maximus IV Extreme not only has plenty of options for overclocking, but also comes with a complete set of troubleshooting toolkits. Q-LEDs indicate individual component errors. Each key power source is equipped with a Voltminder LED for real time voltage level indication. ASUS ProbeIT voltage readout points make voltage power measurement conveniently accessible to overclockers. Onboard power and reset buttons are also available so users can run their systems on an open-air test bench.

Multi-GPU Support

With multiple PCI-E x16 slots, 3-way SLI or CrossFireX is possible. Quad SLI and CrossFireX, using a pair of GTX 590 or Radeon HD6990, is also possible. For users who wish to run 4-way SLI using non-dual GPU video cards, the ASUS ROG Xpander daughter board is available, equipped with a pair of NF200-SLI-A3 chips.

Built-In Supreme FX X-Fi 2

An onboard Supreme FX X-Fi2 audio chip delivers EAX 5.0, THX and OpenAL ultra-high quality, cinematic in-game surround audio. This is the same on-board chip that is present on the Rampage III Formula and Rampage III Gene motherboards. All of the audio jacks on the Crosshair V Formula are fully gold plated to minimize audio quality degradation through oxidation.
